To ensure safety, begin by inspecting the bike’s components and style. What material is it constructed of? How is it built? Create an estimate based on the information we’ve discussed thus far. If your weight, or the combined weight of you and any necessary gear, exceeds the estimate by more than ten pounds, the safest course of action is to trade-in for a new bike that can handle the additional weight.
To put your bike through its paces, find a level, relatively smooth path and ride a short distance over easy terrain. Consider the following carefully during and after your ride:
Are The Tires Underinflated?
Are you aware of the rims making contact with the ground? Stop immediately and inflate them to their maximum permissible Pounds per square inch (PSI). If that does not work, the bike will collapse under your weight (with those tires).
Are The Rims Making A Noise?
Check to see if they are deformed in any way. If any of the spokes are bent or broken, you have exceeded the safe weight limit.
Has The Seat Been Repositioned?
The seat post is a frequent point of failure due to excessive weight. You should not ride the bike if you notice any damage to the seat or post.
How Did The Suspension Manifest Itself?
This is only necessary if your suspension is unable to be locked in place. If your weight compresses the fork significantly, you have exceeded the safe weight tolerance even on flat ground.
